The Football Commission: Week 5 Results

by DG

We missed last week due to my procrastination so you have my apologies for that. Last time, Jeff had the best record and Achillies took home the fantasy crown. Let’s see if ETG can earn himself some respect this time around. Coach Webb is also looking for points in that category. Let the games begin.

Tennessee at Pittsburgh

Seattle at NY Giants

Cincinnati at Jacksonville

New Orleans at Carolina

Oakland at Houston

Philadelphia at Buffalo

Kansas City at Indianapolis

Arizona at Minnesota

Tampa Bay at San Francisco

NY Jets at New England

San Diego at Denver

Green Bay at Atlanta

Chicago at Detroit

Week 5 Winner(s): Jeff  & T-Webb (10-3)

Fantasy Winner: ETG  (Aaron Rodgers – 27)

Overall Leader: Jeff (35-10)

After our third go around, Jeff is still in the lead with 10 losses but Achilles is only 3 games back and the rest of the field is fairly even. T-Webb put himself in good position by tying with Jeff for the best record this week.  ETG chose the safe route with Aaron Rodgers and won this week’s fantasy pick. With the 49ers, Bills &  Lions on top of the NFL right now I don’t expect anything logical to work here so anything is everything for now. Check back in next week and we’ll see if the Cowboys can bounce back against the Pats and what Jigga Man’s Hublot can do.

Achillies: (9-4)  Overall: 32-13

  • Pittsburgh, New York Giants, Cincinnati, New Orleans, Oakland, Buffalo, Indianapolis, Minnesota, Tampa Bay, New England, San Diego, Green Bay, Chicago
  • Fantasy: Look for Fred Jackson (35) to have a big day against the non-existent Philly run defense.

D-Lop: (10-3)  Overall: 31-14

  • Tennessee, New York Giants, Cincinnati, New Orleans, Oakland, Buffalo, Indianapolis, Minnesota, San Fransisco, New England, San Diego, Green  Bay, Detroit
  • Fantasy: Run DMC, Darren Mcfadden (9)… Just win baby!

DG: (8-5)  Overall: 29-16

  • Pitssburgh, Seattle, Jacksonville, New Orleans, Oakland, Philadelphia, Kansas City, Minnesota, Tampa Bay, New York Jets, Denver, Green Bay, Detroit
  • Fantasy: Maurice Jones Drew (18) will have a big day against the weak Cincy defense.

ETG: (9-4)  Overall: 28-17

  • Pittsburgh, New York Giants, Jacksonville, New Orleans, Houston, Buffalo, Kansas City, Arizona, San Fransisco, San Diego, Green Bay, Chicago
  • Fantasy: For obvious reason my pick is Aaron Rodgers (37).

Jeff: (8-5)  Overall: 35-10

  • Pittsburgh, New York Giansts, Jacksonville, New Orleans, Oakland, Philadelphia, Indianapolis, Arizona, Tampa Bay, New England, San Diego, Green Bay, Detroit
  • Fantasy: Matt Stafford (26) because him + Megatron = Fantasy God Numbers.

Justyn Waves: (8-5)  Overall: 28-17

  • Tennessee, New york Giants, Cincinnati, New Orleans, Houston, Buffalo, Indianapolis, Minnesota, San Fransisco, New England, Denver, Green Bay, Detroit
  • Fantasy: The Giants D (18.1) should have a field day against the Seahawks offense as every other team has.

T-Webb: (10-3) Overall: 20-9

  • Pittsburgh, New York Giants, Cincinnati, New Orleans, Buffalo, Kansas City, Arizona, Tampa Bay, New England, San Diego, Green Bay, Detroit
  • Fantasy: Calvin Johnson (30) because he’s Megatron.

Sports: Oakland Raiders Owner, Al Davis Dies at Age 82

by DG

Al Davis, the Oakland Raiders owner who was one of the towering figures of professional football over the last half century, has died.

The Raiders’ web site has confirmed that Davis passed away this morning. He was 82.

In 1963, the Raiders, at the time a struggling franchise in the upstart American Football League, hired the 33-year-old Davis to be their head coach and general manager. He instantly reversed the team’s fortunes and was named the AFL’s Coach of the Year in their first season.

After three seasons as the team’s head coach, Davis briefly left to become commissioner of the AFL, and his aggressive approach in competing head to head with the NFL was one of the reasons that the NFL’s owners agreed to merge with their rival league. With that mission accomplished, Davis settled into a new role as managing general partner of the Raiders, a role he would stay in for the rest of his life.

On Davis’s watch, the Raiders won Super Bowls XI, XV and XVIII. He was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1992 and is the only person to serve as a personnel assistant, scout, assistant coach, head coach, general manager, commissioner and team owner.

Davis will be remembered as one of the greatest contributors to the game of football that the sport has ever seen.

The Football Commission: Week 3 Results

by DG

Heading into Week 3, the separation between the boys and the men will start to become apparent. Last week, Jeff had the best record and Achillies took home the fantasy crown. Let’s see if ETG can earn himself some respect this time around. Coach Webb is also looking for points in that category. Let the games begin.

DG: 9-7  Overall: 21-11

  • Houston, Philadelphia, Carolina, Buffalo, Miami, San Fransisco, Denver, Detroit, Baltimore, New York Jets, San Diego, Arizona, Atlanta, Green Bay, Pittsburgh, Dallas
  • Fantasy: Fred Jackson (24) is on my fantasy team and he has produced the last few weeks. Going up against the Pats he will get more balls thrown his way so look for him to score big.

ETG: 10-6   Overall: 19-13

  • New Orleans, Philadelphia, Carolina, Buffalo, Miami, San Fransisco, Tennessee, Detroit, Baltimore, New York Jets, San Diego, Arizona, Atlanta, Green Bay, Pittsburgh, Washington

Winner: Jeff (14-2)

Fantasy Winner: Achillies (Tate – 23)

This was the first week for us so we are still learning what we can improve on and how to expand. Jeff only had 2 losses putting him in the lead, followed by a 3-way between Achillies, D-Lop & DG for 2nd. Achillies also won the fantasy pick with Ben Tate picking up 23 points.

Achillies: 12-4

  • Picks: Detroit, Baltimore, Cleveland, Oakland, Minnesota, New Orleans, New York Jets, Pittsburgh, Arizona, Green Bay, Dallas, New England, Denver, Houston, Atlanta, New York Giants

The League: Herschel Walker NFL Comeback at Age 48

by DG

Herschel Walker has already had many diverse chapters in a fascinating sports life. He was one of the greatest college football players of all time while at the University of Georgia, an NFL star, an Olympic bobsledder, and most recently, he’s dabbled as a mixed martial artist.

But at 48 years old, Walker is still looking to athletically challenge himself, and his latest thought is a doozy: he’s considering an NFL comeback.

“I know I can play,” Walker said on a Monday conference call that was intended to promote his Jan. 29 Strikeforce MMA match. “If I continue to stay in the shape I’m in now, I know I can play when I’m 50. Right now, if you asked if I can play today, there’s absolutely no doubt in my mind I can play football today, that I can help out a team today.

“I 100 percent guarantee you I can help a football team out,” Walker continued.

News: Body of Ed Reed’s (Baltimore Raven) Brother Still Missing

by DG

This is a sad story. Hopefully they can recover it soon.

A private search team called in by Baltimore Ravens safety Ed Reed and family members took to the Mississippi River at first light on Monday to search for the body of Reed’s missing 28-year-old brother.

Texas EquuSearch on Sunday had located what it believed to be the body of Brian Reed tangled in debris about 20 miles northwest of New Orleans. But Kenner Police Lt. Wayne McInnis said divers were unable to find it.

“We had the perfect image,” said Tim Miller, director of EquuSearch. “There’s no doubt it was him but it was in an area that has so much debris that doing anything there, it’s really hard.”

Rumorville: Vince Young to the Minnesota Vikings?

by DG

Minnesota Vikings quarterbacks coach had this to say about Vince Young:

“I know that question is going to be coming,” Craig Johnson told Jim Wyatt of the Tennessean.  “So my answer is going to be this:  I do have a relationship with Vince, a long relationship with him.  But the head coach and ownership and the offensive coordinator of the Minnesota Vikings — they’re the ones that are going to make the decision.  The assistant coaches coach.”

“I am sure they’ll do due diligence on Vince, and every quarterback that is going to be available on the market is going to be discussed,” Johnson said.  “I know it is going to be discussed, and I’ll put my two cents worth on him because obviously I have more of a relationship with him that most.  And then whatever decision is going to be made will be made.  Obviously I have a good working relationship with Vince, and he produced pretty well under me.”

“I think [Vince's] future is still to be written,” Johnson said.  “What I would officially say about him, and what needs to happen about him, is in the big picture he needs to be known and thought of more for what’s happened on the field than what’s happened off the field.  I think that is true of him and any quarterback.”
